Rotterdam's safety profile shows more postcode-level variation than either Amsterdam or Utrecht — a function of the city's history, its ongoing transformation, and the substantial differences in residential character between its neighborhoods. That variation makes safety scoring particularly valuable in Rotterdam: the difference between the highest and lowest scoring postcodes on crime incident frequency is measurably larger than in more uniform Dutch cities.
Our data sources
Rotterdam's safety scores draw from three official data streams: crime incidents per 1,000 residents from national police registration data disaggregated to four-digit postcode level, traffic incident frequency from Rijkswaterstaat records, and environmental quality scores from RIVM monitoring. Each sub-dimension is normalized, weighted, and visible in CasaCanal's output — so the drivers of a postcode's safety score are transparent and comparable to any other Dutch city in the dataset.
Areas that score well
Rotterdam's highest safety scores concentrate in outer residential postcodes — particularly those with lower traffic density and stronger environmental quality indicators — and in the regenerated parts of the city centre where measurable improvement on crime incident frequency over recent periods has created a gap between current data and public reputation. Kralingen consistently scores well across all three safety sub-dimensions. Several northwestern postcodes also appear in the top tier through strong environmental and traffic safety scores. Data sources and methodology
Rotterdam safety scoring uses national police crime data (per 1,000 residents), Rijkswaterstaat traffic incident records, and RIVM environmental indicators — all normalized at four-digit Rotterdam postcode level. Full methodology at casacanal.nl/methodology.
