Utrecht is a green city — but green space isn't evenly distributed across its postcodes. The distribution doesn't follow the price map, and the postcodes that score highest on accessible green space per resident are often not the ones that dominate expat shortlists or lifestyle guides. For residents where daily access to parks and natural environment is a quality-of-life priority, the green space score is one of the most decision-relevant Life Score dimensions CasaCanal measures.
How we score green space
The green space dimension combines three sub-metrics at postcode level: accessible park area per resident within walkable distance (CBS municipal green space registry data), water proximity weighted for canals, rivers, and recreational waterways, and vegetation coverage density from national land use classification data. A postcode with one small square surrounded by dense housing does not score equivalently to one where parks and waterways are genuinely distributed through the residential fabric. The difference is visible in the scores.
Where the data points
Utrecht's highest green space scores concentrate in the western residential areas and postcodes adjacent to the Leidsche Rijn corridor. Oog in Al consistently appears in the top tier. Some newer development areas adjacent to the Leidsche Rijn also score well — recent development with higher green integration scores than established inner postcodes. The city centre scores lower on green space per resident than its cultural richness and price point might suggest. See also: Oog in Al vs Lombok — a data comparison.
Data sources and methodology
Green space scoring draws from CBS postcode green space registry, municipal park and water classification records, and national vegetation coverage data — normalized at four-digit Utrecht postcode level. Full methodology at casacanal.nl/methodology.
