Transport connectivity to Amsterdam Centraal is one of the highest-weighted factors in postcode selection for commuters, frequent travelers, and anyone who uses the national rail network regularly. But "near Amsterdam Central" measured as straight-line distance is often a poor proxy for actual connectivity — a postcode 4km out with direct tram access can score higher than one 1.5km away with poor cycling infrastructure and no direct transit line.
CasaCanal measures transport connectivity as a composite index: OV coverage score (tram, metro, and bus lines per postcode), cycling infrastructure quality rating, and effective travel time to Amsterdam Centraal under standard conditions. The result is a transport score that reflects lived commute experience, not map geometry.
What our transport score measures
The transport connectivity index draws from GVB network coverage data (route density and stop proximity per postcode), NS intercity connectivity for Amsterdam station catchment, and cycling infrastructure quality assessed from municipal road classification data. Effective travel time is estimated using multi-modal routing assumptions, not straight-line calculations. Every postcode gets a normalized score on this composite — so you can rank and compare neighborhoods by actual transport access rather than approximate proximity.
Finding the best-connected areas
Amsterdam's highest transport scores concentrate around postcodes with multi-modal access — areas served by both metro and tram, or by high-quality cycling routes that make a 10-12 minute ride fast and safe. Several of these postcodes are predictable; others appear in the top tier because of infrastructure that's easy to overlook without systematic analysis. Data sources and methodology
Transport scoring uses GVB route and stop data, NS station catchment analysis, municipal cycling infrastructure classifications, and postcode-level effective travel time estimates. All data normalized at four-digit postcode level. Full methodology at casacanal.nl/methodology.
